Honey. Literally.
The Honey Bee. A few years ago we started our first hive, not knowing what to expect, except a few stings and hopefully something sweet at the end of the season. What we discovered was a deeper insight, a little joy and something very sweet! Our first hive reinforced some life lessons that we have carried with us into Born of Sound that we would like to share.
-
Great success comes if everyone works together. Each honey bee in the hive has a job to do and the success of the hive depends on each bee faithfully performing its job. There are no lazy honey bees.
-
Find focus. Honey bees are not naturally aggressive, but they are incredibly single minded and extremely protective. Honey bees will only sting when necessary since once they do, they die. However, to protect their hive and all it holds, they are prepared to make this sacrifice.
-
Keep an open palate. We didn’t know how our honey would actually taste, other than sweet. During our first harvest, we had two frames with honey that was darker in color than the eight others. When we tasted it, it was so spicy that it burned our lips a bit. We remembered that not far from the hive there was a patch of Thai Dragon chili peppers. The bees had visited those blossoms, and the flavor unexpectedly filtered into the honey. The other frames presented distinct flavors too, including citrus, savory oregano, and sugar sweet.
-
Communicate and Dance! Honey bees communicate through dance. Seriously! There is one called the “waggle dance” that they execute to provide the coordinates of good nectar and pollen sources to their hive mates.
-
Nature is living art. An inspiration to us in our work and daily lives.
